China's electronic information industry is concentrated in the coastal industrial bases along the river and
some of western regions which have better industrial bases. The regional characteristic is very obvious.
The industry clusters have gradually formed as the four electronic information industry bases including the Pearl River Delta,
the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Sea regions as well as the western regions leading by Chongqing, Xi'an,
Chengdu, Wuhan and Changsha.
First, the Pearl River Delta region. Since the reform and opening up, the Pearl River Delta relying on regional advantages
near Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as the comparative advantage of lower labor costs,
has formed the distinctive electronic information industry cluster through investment, taking processing trade as
a breakthrough and accepting the transfer of international division of labour.
Taking the Pearl River Delta as the center, the high-tech industrial belt has become China's largest
and fastest growing processing-intensive region with the highest exports
proportion of electronic information products. It has brought together a large number of international
electronic information products manufacturing enterprises. At present, in the Pearl River Delta region,
the output value of electronic information products manufacturing has accounted for half of the country
as a pivotal position. The main advantageous fields are communication equipments, computers, household appliances,
audio-visual products and basic components, etc.
From the current development situation, the Pearl River Delta has formed a product structure focusing
on communication and consumer electronic products, and has formed the strong manufacturing advantage
and the cluster development characteristic.
Second, the Yangtze River Delta region.
Shanghai is the center of the Yangtze River Delta, which is an important electronic information industrial belt.
Here has become the world's key electronic information industry investment region.
International electronic information industry, especially the electronic information product manufacturing industry,
is entering into this area in large scales. An electronic information industry based new economy industrial belt
has been formed. The Yangtze River Delta region is rich in technology resources, with a large number of
Chinese major universities, high-quality personnels, and close cooperation between schools and enterprises for
promoting. The important force for electronic information industry development has achieved a certain breakthrough
in certain fields of technology. Because of a complete industrial chain, the significant regional characteristic,
with high-grade products, high technology, large-scale investment, and industrial parks and bases for the carrier,
a featuring industry cluster has been formed focusing on integrated circuits, computers and software.
Third, the Bohai Sea area. There is a big difference of the different provinces in Bohai area on the economic conditions,
but the provinces, in the electronic information industry, have formed competitive advantages on their own
good industrial base, strong scientific research strength, good location and transportation advantage,
through the development of appropriate development strategies. A distinctive electronic information industry cluster
has been developed here. However, the comprehensive ability here is weaker than that of the Pearl River Delta
and Yangtze River Delta region. The representative cities and areas are Beijing, Tianjin and Shandong.
Forth, the central and western regions. Central and western regions has been the focus of China's
electronic information industry layout. This region has accumulated a solid technical foundation.
Overall, the electronic information industry in central and western regions is of huge property of military electronics,
with the characteristics of independent research and development and self-contained system.
This area is still the main military base now. But the region's industrial chain is in dispersion condition,
the cooperation of production is difficult, the total industry scale is small, the overall level of development
is relatively backward, so large-scale electronic information industrial belt has not formed.
